Problem of the Week
Problem B and Solution
Draw Me!

Problem

Using a protractor and a ruler, follow the instructions below to draw three different shapes.

  1. Steps for drawing Shape \(1\):

What is the measure of angle \(ACB\) in your shape?

What kind of triangle did you draw?

  2. Steps for drawing Shape \(2\):

    What shape did you draw?

  3. Steps for drawing Shape \(3\):

    What shape did you draw?

Solution

  1. Following the steps for Shape 1 creates a scalene triangle. The measure of angle \(ACB\) is \(25\degree\).

Triangle ABC has side AB of length 4 cm, BC of length 8 cm
and AC of length 5.1 cm. The three angles of the triangle measure 123
degrees (at vertex A), 32 degrees (at B), and 25 degrees (at C).

  2. Following the steps for Shape 2 creates a parallelogram, which is a quadrilateral with two pairs of parallel sides.

Parallelogram ABCD with sides AB and CD parallel and of
length 6 cm, and sides AD and BC parallel and of length 7 cm. The angle
at vertex B measures 135 degrees and the angle at vertex C measures 45
degrees.

  3. Following the steps for Shape 3 creates a right trapezoid, which is a quadrilateral with one pair of parallel sides and two right angles.

Trapezoid ABCD with parallel sides AD, of length 7 cm, and
BC, of length 5 cm. Side AB meets each of AD and BC at a right angle and
has length 5 cm.
