00:00:03.940 --> 00:00:09.240
My name is Jen Nelson. I am a Lecturer in the CEMC and I'm the Lead of the Student Workshops group.
2
00:00:09.660 --> 00:00:13.200
The Student Workshops give us a chance to meet face to face with students.
3
00:00:13.520 --> 00:00:19.040
A common goal is often to spark or nurture interest in Mathematics and/or Computer Science.
4
00:00:19.940 --> 00:00:22.320
To give these students a chance to meet
5
00:00:22.540 --> 00:00:25.640
Mathematicians or people who have graduated with a Math Degree.
6
00:00:25.840 --> 00:00:29.500
These workshops also give students a chance to meet other like-minded
7
00:00:29.660 --> 00:00:32.880
students, who are also interested in Math and Computer Science and network with those students.
8
00:00:33.120 --> 00:00:36.660
We have workshops that are geared toward students in Waterloo Region.
9
00:00:36.840 --> 00:00:41.600
We have workshops where we invite students from throughout Canada to apply and come to the University of Waterloo.
10
00:00:41.900 --> 00:00:47.180
And we also have workshops where we visit schools throughout Ontario, throughout Canada and Internationally.
11
00:00:48.280 --> 00:00:51.400
When CEMC people have come for school visits,
12
00:00:51.520 --> 00:00:54.740
my students have really connected with them, in learning how to
13
00:00:55.000 --> 00:00:58.480
break down a problem and put it together into a solution.
14
00:00:58.860 --> 00:01:03.360
In an average year, Faculty members in the CEMC you would have visited about 350 different schools.
15
00:01:03.820 --> 00:01:08.880
Half of them are within Ontario, a quarter are within Canada but outside Ontario,
16
00:01:09.360 --> 00:01:11.900
and the remaining quarter are International.
17
00:01:12.480 --> 00:01:16.240
That equates to about 20.000 students that we're visiting a year.
18
00:01:16.560 --> 00:01:21.860
For the workshops that we offer on campus we probably have about 700 to 800 students that attend a year.
19
00:01:22.160 --> 00:01:25.320
So one of our popular on-campus workshops is Math Circles.
20
00:01:26.040 --> 00:01:31.880
So we offer Math Circles for students in grades 6 through 12, with 4 different sessions each week.
21
00:01:32.140 --> 00:01:36.820
Sometimes the topics chosen our extra topics that are outside of the curriculum.
22
00:01:36.840 --> 00:01:40.620
Sometimes instructors take a topic in the curriculum that they just explore it deeper.
23
00:01:40.880 --> 00:01:46.380
So I think the goal of math circles, like a lot of our workshops, is to introduce students to different areas and that they might not otherwise see...
24
00:01:46.430 --> 00:01:50.610
... and kind of inspire them to learn more about those areas as well.
