Launch of Problems with Purpose — The Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing (CEMC) is situated on the traditional territory of the Neutral, Anishinaabeg and Haudenosaunee peoples. As part of the University of Waterloo campus, the CEMC is located on the Haldimand Tract, the land granted to the Six Nations that includes six miles on each side of the Grand River.

Sharing a passion for math problems
How many times has a young person asked, “Why do I have to learn math? Does it really matter?” Tom Higgins would say it matters a lot. “Math is fundamental to solving some of the world’s biggest challenges – food sustainability, clean water, climate change and national security,” says Higgins, now retired after a career in trading and finance.

Canadian Team Math Contest in Lambton-Kent – Teams representing eleven schools recently spent a day at the Sarnia board office. The day began with an introduction to cryptography and data compression from the CEMC. Then students competed following the format of our Canadian Team Math Contest. Organizer Brian McBain says "It’s finally giving us a chance to bring our brightest math kids together and give them a chance to show off, and show how much they actually know,”

ACM recognizes Professor Troy Vasiga as a 2017 Senior Member – The Association for Computing Machinery has named Professor Troy Vasiga as an ACM Senior Member. Troy has played a key role in the CEMC for many years especially as a champion of our computing activities. He is the Director of the Canadian Computing Competition, Leader of Canada’s team at the International Olympiad in Informatics and chief architect of the Beaver Computing Challenge.

CEMC Launches Free CS Courseware – As educators struggle to expand digital literacy globally and U.S. President Obama announces a $4-billion Computer Science for All initiative, we have developed free online courseware that will teach people computer science and programming skills. It’s free to use, doesn’t require registration to access, and has minimal software requirements.

Over 220 000 students register to write our mathematics contests each year. Thousands of these students participate in contests that involve writing out full solutions. Marking all of these would not be possible without the incredible energy, enthusiasm and support of hundreds of volunteer markers.

CEMC mathematics courseware – What is it? – An open and online teaching and learning platform. On-screen text with synchronized audio and interactive investigations teach the concepts from Grade 12 Advanced Functions (Pre-Calculus) and Grade 12 Calculus and Vectors. Quizzes giving instant feedback, exercises, and enrichment and extension questions help consolidate learning. No login or special software is needed.
